Roth Bar & Grill are taking their restaurant out of Hauser and Wirth this summer with new concept Roth on the Road! Launching over an April weekend at beautiful Roundhill Grange (shown above). This Georgian corker lies in the Somerset countryside just shy of Wincanton, in the village of Charlton Musgrove.

Wood fired kitchen
Approaching Roundhill Grange from the side, we could smell the incredible aromas of the wood fired kitchen before we saw it! Welcomed by Steve and Jules Horrell of Roth Bar and Grill, who opened the restaurant in 2014 and have been cooking over fire ever since. Roth Bar & Grill is situated within the luxe art gallery Hauser & Wirth in Bruton, Princess Eugenie works in the London branch.
“Roth on the Road is an entirely new concept for 2019 – taking the food, fire, styling and service that we offer at the restaurant, out on the road.”
It’s this willingness to take things back to a rustic way of cooking that really spoke to us. Chatting with Steve about his ethos further cemented our own opinion that Somerset isn’t an autenstatious county. And yet it is rich in so many ways. Humble and luxurious equally.
As carnivores we both ordered our lunch immediately as, honestly, the wood smoke aroma was too enticing to ignore. The chefs built our buns deftly and with great skill. Roth on the Road can cater for any party whether in the home or out on location. Able to provide marquees and wood smoked food to your specification. Occasion cakes can also be provided.
A hessian pathway strung with lights led us to an intriguing dutch barn style marquee.
Cruck Tent’s unique marquee
Cruck Tent showcased their NEW and unique dutch barn style tent at the launch. Taking our loaded brioche buns into the tent we looked around the wooden structure. Sturdy and roomy, bright and airy. The feel was a lovely mix of unique design and sturdy functionality.
3 years in the making from concept, the tent is a triumph in engineering and what in can offer; “a modern version of a medieval cruck barn, made from high quality douglas fir timber. An amazing and unique space for weddings and events”.
Local and international drinks on offer at the bar.
Babylonstoren to recreate South Africa magic in Somerset
Moving outside, a smaller canopy held wine tasting from South Africa luxe brand Babylonstoren.
Businessman and hotelier of Babylonstoren, Koos Bekker will hope to recreate the success of his hotel on the Cape Winelands here in Somerset with an overhaul of Hadspen House located near Castle Cary. With a farm to fork philosophy and bringing local Somerset to the fore once again, the hotel will feature a spa and cider farm/apple juice and cottage garden.
Somerset Gelato from dairy farmers Palette and Pasture
Lastly, we tasted some gorgeous gelato from Frome based dairy farmers Palette & Pasture. Made in small batches, making Italian gelato rather than big batch ice cream, the gelato uses 73% of their unhomogenised milk instead of double cream.
Churned slowly allows less air to be added into the gelato which creates a smooth and dense texture. This makes the gelato luxurious! Milk is naturally lower in fat and sugar then double cream making it a healthier option too. Delicious sorbets are made with 50% fruit and are dairy free! Pallette & Pasture are also available for hire for children’s parties.
